Smyth Makes B Standard mark at Junior & Under 23 Champs

While all eyes were on the Raheny 5 this afternoon, the younger generation of club athletes put in excellent performances at the National Junior & Under 23 championships with a great medal haul and a club record broken.

Mark Smyth was the standout performer of the day, taking gold in the junior 200 metres making the European junior B standard for a second time.

Mark broke Jamie Davis’s record of 21.91 as he ran 21.71 in the heats only to further improve the time as he won the final in 21.62 seconds, inside the European junior B standard of 21.76.

There was also gold for Conor Bermingham in the Under 23 men’s pole vault. Conor won the competition with a best clearance of 4.20 metres.

Early in the program Cillian Kirwan and Eoin Strutt battled in the U23 1500 metre final with both men making the podium.

Cillian took the silver in three minute 58.15 seconds with Eoin taking the bronze in three minute 59.10 seconds.

Holly Ryan made a successful return to competition, taking silver in the Under 23 400 metres in 60.94 seconds. Holly missed out on a second medal finishing fifth in the 200 metres final posting 27.07, having ran 26.76 in the heats.

Sean Dowling took home bronze in the Under 23 200 metres having run 23.13 seconds in the final and having posted 23.32 in the heats.

Dan Scully finished just outside the medals in the Under 23 800 metres, finishing fourth in two minutes 1.08 seconds while Dylan Kirwan was eighth in two minutes 11.01 seconds.
