Sittuk First Home in Dublin

Freddy Sittuk led home a huge contingent of Raheny Shamrock Athlete’s at the 2017 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon.

The 2017 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon was possibly the most dramatic in the 38 year history of the event with just 23 seconds separating Dublin marathon winner Bernard Rotich of Kenya with fourth place Sittuk.

Sittuk had always been in contention throughout the 26.2 mile and it was only as the race paced the old D4 Hotel, just over a mile from home that the competition struck for victory.

Ethopian Asefa Bekele was the one to make a telling move for home in that final mile with Ukrainian Yurii Ruskyuk breaking the field and Sittuk trailing to fourth place.

However Rotich made a move for home in the final half mile to win out in 2:15.52, three seconds clear of Ruskyuk with Bekele a further three seconds back.

Sittuk crossed the line for fourth place, the best finish by a Raheny Shamrock athlete in the Dublin marathon since Dick Hooper’s third place finish in 1987.

Raheny Shamrock had the largest number of competitors of any club in today’s Dublin Marathon with 63 finishing the cruelling course.
