Dooney Brings Shamrock’s to Ninth in Europe

Kevin Dooney led Raheny Shamrock home at this morning’s European Champions Club Cup as the men’s team finish ninth.

Dooney came home in 17th place as the first Raheny athlete over the line, some 47 seconds off third place finisher Ramazan Ozdemir of Istanbul BBSK.

Denis Kiplangat of the Sporting Club de Portugal was the outright winner with Belgian Isaac Kimeli second, racing for Olympic Essenbeek Halle.

Mick Clohisey was the second Raheny man home in 26th place with Mark Kirwan 59th and Cillian O’Leary 68th giving Raheny 170 points and ninth place overall.

While Eoin Strutt finished in 76th place and John Dunne in 93rd place.

The European Champions Club Cup went to Portuguese champions Sporting Club de Portugal with 25 points. Silver went to Belgium’s, Olympic Essenbeek Halle with 40 points and bronze went to Spain’s Atletismo Bikila with 74 points.

22 of the 28 entered clubs completed the course, so a very credible performance by the Raheny men, who are without question the ninth best club in Europe.

It’s only a matter of time before we can confirm we’re number one!
