Fogarty Seventh At European Under 23

Niamh Fogarty finished an excellent seventh at the European Under-23 championship.

The discus thrower had set a new club record of 52.19 metres in Thursday’s qualifying round, however nerves clearly got the better of her, fouling the first two attempts in the final.

Fogarty’s third attempt marked 51.97 metres which sealed seventh place.

The standard was especially hot as Gold medallist Croatia’s Marija Toli threw a European Under-23 lead of 62.76 metres to win out.

Alexandra Emilianov of Moldova and Germany’s Annina Brandenburg took silver and bronze with best throws of 57.30 metres and 56.52 metres.

Elsewhere Mark Smyth and Brian Fay posted personal bests and club records to progress to the next round of the 200 metres and 3,000m steeplechase respectively.

Smyth posted 21.29 seconds to finish fifth in heat two, a new personal best that saw him take a semi-final spot as the fastest loser.

Smyth’s semi-final takes place just after 10 to five tomorrow afternoon where he was drawn in lane two, Britain’s Shemar Boldizsar holds the fastest personal best of 20.65 seconds.

The first two in three semi-finals with the two fastest loser’s progress to Sunday’s final.

Brian Fay just missed out on an automatic place in the 3,000m steeplechase final when he finished his heat in sixth place in eight minutes 56.63 seconds just point 18 seconds off fifth place.

Fay however progressed as the fastest of five losers to progress to Sunday final at 20 to five Irish time.
