Stone’s U19 National Bronze Statue

Relishing the challenging examination of fitness and desire at the All Ireland Cross Country Uneven Age Group Championships last Sunday in the aptly named Cow Park, Dunboyne two young Raheny athletes, Daniel Stone and Adam Condon showed they are wintering very well writes Dick Hooper.

Stone who transferred into Raheny this Autumn ran a magnificent race in the U19 Boys to finish 3rd.

This built on the outstanding run Daniel had when finishing 8th in the Junior U20 championships three weeks previously.

He must now surely be thinking of making the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships when they come to Dublin in December 2020.

Adam Condon has enjoyed a December of emergence. In finishing 8th in the Boys U17 event he improved a whopping 21 places from his performance in the U16 race in 2018.

The previous week at the Jingle Bells 5K in Phoenix Park he had run 15.49 to take the Junior spoils and in so doing trimmed a whopping 28 seconds off his previous road PB.

In two very competitive national novice championship races the women’s team finished fifth with Niamh Corbett (20th), Lucy Barrett (29th), Sarah Quigley (35th) and Orla Manley (58th).

They were well backed up by Laura Brennan, Siobhan McCurdie, Sinead Currie and Orla Gilheaney.

The men’s event was equally competitive with 216 finishers and 26 teams. The Raheny team of Robert Frewen, Ian McConkey, Eoin O’Dwyer and Cillin Corbett backed up by Graham O’Dwyer and William Walsh, ran very well and finished 17th team, only eight points of a top 15 finish.
