Golden U23 Indoor Record for Smyth

Mark Smyth landed under-23 gold as he set a new championship best in the national junior and U23 championship in Athlone IT.

Smyth posted 21.36 seconds to take the tape in the final well clear of Donore’s Paul McDermott.

However it was in Smyth’s heat were he posted a new Championship record 21.20 seconds, nearly one second faster than the next qualifier across the field.

That time is also a new club record.

While Kim O`Hare won a silver medal in the Under 23 triple jump with a best of 11.47 metres, another personal best and club record set in AIT. Grace Furlong of Waterford took gold with a best of 12.13 metres.

Mathew Cotter took bronze in the long jump with a personal best of 6.43 metres, gold went to Joseph Miniter of St. Mary’s (Clare) with a best of 6.52. Eoin Keenan took silver with 6.46m.

Elsewhere Conall O`Toole just missed out on the 200m final posting 23.00 seconds while Oisin McCorry took second in his 400 metre heat in 51.47 seconds.

In the U23 distance track events Aoibhinn McGoldrick place sixth in the 1500m in 4:46.87 with Lucy Barrett also racing.

In the junior competitions Michael Farrelly was seventh in the 60m clocking 7.10 seconds, Triona Nicdhonaill ran well in the 1500m finishing in 5:09.12

Aisling Mumford was just outside the medals in the pole vault taking fourth place in 2.60 metres while Conor Flanagan set a new personal best of 3.10 metres in his pole vault competition.
