Smyth on B way to Euro’s

Mark Smyth has secured the B qualification standard for next summer’s European under 20 Championships.

Smyth posted 21.74 seconds over 200 metres, finishing third in the national track and field league final in Tullamore last August.

Athletics Ireland and European athletics announced the standards during the week for the European under 20 championships which will be held in Grosseto Italy, July 20 to 23rd.

It was an impressive 2016 for half lapper Smyth who took silver in the All-Ireland Indoor juvenile championships posting 22.40 seconds.

Smyth grabbed outdoor bronze in the under 19 All-Ireland clocking 21.92 seconds before wrapping up his season taking third in the national senior track & field league final.

The final selection for the European under 20’s will be made by Athletics Ireland on July third 2017, which is the date the qualification window ends.

There are a maximum of three athlete’s per event which can be selected for Grosseto with the A standard set at 21.40 seconds.
