Kieran Kelly landed the first national 5 kilometre road championship at the Irish Runner 5k in the Phoenix Park today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kelly finished second overall, behind Peter Somba of Dunboyne, but was first qualified Irish athlete home to take the new national title.<\/span><\/p>\n

One reminisces to Kieran\u2019s debut at 800 metres in 2011, when the stadium announcer noted that Ireland had a very bad record of 400 metre runners transitioning to 800 metres.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well Kieran has certainly proved them all wrong as he collected his third national title to go with his 800m indoor gold medal in 2017 and 1500m indoor gold in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kelly posted 14 minutes 45 seconds for gold, nine seconds behind Somba, but six seconds ahead of Glaslough Harriers Conor Duffy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kelly led home the men\u2019s senior team to silver, just 31 seconds behind North Belfast Harriers. The team was Kelly, John Dunne, Wesley Grant and Terry Keogh.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was silver also for the women\u2019s senior team of Zoe Quinn, Orla Manley and Helen Carr.<\/span><\/p>\n

The master\u2019s women\u2019s team of Aisling McNally, Orla Lambe and Rachel Ormrod were seventh. The women\u2019s masters 50 team of Annette Kealy, Adrienne Atkins and Caroline Farrelly took gold nearly nine minutes clear of Mullingar Harriers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The men\u2019s masters\u2019 team of Ronan Kenny, Philip McGovern and Keith Fleming took fifth place with the men\u2019s masters 50 team of Brian McWeeney, Christy Reilly and Damien Martin were sixth.<\/span><\/p>\n
