Brian Fay and Niamh Fogarty landed gold on day two of the national track and field championships in Santry while Cillian Kirwan took 800 metre bronze.<\/p>\n

The day got off to an excellent start with Brian Fay producing a controlled almost polished performance in wintry conditions to take the 3,000m steeplechase title in 8:52.88<\/p>\n

Finley Daly of Sligo took the silver medal trailing behind Fay in 8:56.57.<\/p>\n

Niamh Fogarty landed another national senior title in the discus with a best throw of 53.73 metres with young Casey Mulvey of Inny Vale taking silver in 45.18 seconds.<\/p>\n

Cillian Kirwan produced a brave front running performance to land 800m bronze in 1:49.67.<\/p>\n

Kirwan and McCann battled it out at the front of the race with pre-race favourite John Fitzsimons taking gold with a fast finish in 1:49.48, McCann posted 1:49.51 for silver.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere Oisin McCorry took an impressive fifth place in the 400m hurdles posting 56.16 seconds behind winner Tom Barr.<\/p>\n

In the Women\u2019s 1500m final Niamh Kearney posted 4:28.43 for ninth place, while Matthew Cotter finished ninth in the long jump with a best of 6.19 metres.<\/p>\n

In the junior men\u2019s 3,000m Adam Condon posted 8:53.49 and Dara McRiocaird 9:36.16, while in the 5000m b race Robert Kelly posted 16:03.33, Dylan O\u2019Brien 16:13.31, Robert Frewen 16:21.08. In heat two Gavin Eccles clocked 15:00.32 to win with Shane Ryan posting 15:16.27.<\/p>\n

Editors comment:<\/strong> It is extremely disappointing too see the return of the 5000 metre B and C race at the national championship as Athletics Ireland competition committee have removed sporting integrity from the 5000 metres.<\/p>\n

5000 metre heats were re-introduced in 2017 and to my research were quiet popular with the athletes, unlike holding B races were a judge would decide which of the athletes had the right to contest for national medals.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the Raheny Shamrock stalwart who fought for the re-introduction of heats at competition committee level and won is no longer with us.<\/p>\n
