O’Flynn Lands Under 19 Gold

Susie O’Flynn landed national 800 metre under 19 gold on the final day of the Irish Life Health national indoor juvenile championships in Athlone IT.

O’Flynn powered away from the field to set a new personal best of two minutes 16.27 seconds for the national title nearly one second clear of Kilkenny City Harriers Annie O’Connor.

O’Connor posted 2:17.48 with Newbridge A.C’s Ellie O’Toole taking bronze in 2:17.85. Aoibhinn McGoldrick took fifth place in 2:21.42.

O’Flynn posted a huge personal best of five seconds for gold, lowering her time from 2.21.

Meanwhile Sean L’Estrange was just 16 hundredths of a second outside a medal taking fourth place in the 200 metre under 16 final, clocking 24 seconds dead.

Portmarnock’s Michael Farrelly took gold in 22.99 seconds with Robert Twomey of Leevale taking bronze just ahead of L’Estrange in 23:84.

L’Estrange had qualified for the final having won his earlier heat in 23.77 seconds which was a new personal best. Conall O’Toole clocked 23.46 in his heat, no progressing.

Caoimhe Flynn posted a personal best of 2:29.64, a six second improvement to finish eighth in the under 18 800 metre final.

Matthew Cotter was just outside the medals when finishing fifth in the under 19 triple jump with a best of 12.34 metres which occurred on his third jump.

Elsewhere Ben Runswick posted two minutes 24.03 seconds in the under 16 800 metres with Caoimhe Flynn clocking a personal best of 2.29.64 in the under 18 800 metre final.

Sean Maher posted 9.80 metres in the under 16 shot put.
