Lord Mayor Series Runners Jump 45%

The 2017 Lord Mayor of Raheny Road Race Series has seen a 45% year-on-year increase in participants as runners fled to Raheny on Tuesday evenings.

The series which was launched in 1999 as part of Pat Hooper’s Lord Mayor of Raheny campaign has grown from strength to strength every year.

Now the series which includes 13 two mile road races every Tuesday night between June 13 and August 29 has become the main short distance road race series in Ireland.

Race Numbers have exploded with over 250 individual competitors taking part in the race series with each race averaging over 70 finishers.

The series promoted by Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club caters for athletes of all standards with prizes awarded per race in each age category.

33 athlete’s received a specially commissioned plaque for partaking in eight races of the series.

“We are delighted to see such big numbers take part in the lord mayor series” explained race director Pat Hooper.

“The Lord Mayor Series showcases Raheny Shamrock as a community club who caters for athletes of all standards and ability.”

“We could not organise a weekly race series without a dedicated group of volunteers, who assist with all aspects of race organisation.”

“Also to the countless donations to the post-race celebrations, which makes the series a fulfilling occasion.”

Raheny Shamrock are the reigning Men’s All Ireland Cross Country, 10Km Road and Road Relay Champions.

The Club organises 37 road races per year including Ireland’s biggest 5 Mile, the AXA Raheny 5 and the Battle of Clontarf 10 Mile.

“While we have excelled at track & field, road and cross country, at our heart we are a community club and we take great pride in bringing so many people to Raheny” added Hooper.

The final race of the series takes place on Tuesday August 29th Entry fee is €7 for individual race entry.
