Becker Helps Ireland To World Indoor Relay Fifth

Sophie Becker helped the Irish 4x400m women’s relay team to fifth at the World Indoor championships in Glasgow. The Irish team of Phil Healy, Becker, Roisin Harrison and Mawdsley posted 3:28.92 for fifth place behind, Netherlands, USA, Great Britain and Belgium. “It’s a testament to the squad we have” said Phil Healy afterward. “We’ve great subs back in warm up and the team is constantly changing which drives everyone on”….

Big Runs In Tokyo And Rome

John Clohisey was first home at the Tokyo marathon this morning posting three hours and 34 seconds One of some very good performances in Japan as Lisa McCarthy posted 3:22.09 and John Clohisey Snr clocked 3:41.53. That means John senior has now ran all six major marathons. At the Rome Half-marathon, Francesco Petroni posted 87.41, Brian McWeeney 83.48 and Mauro Piancentini  1:52.10.

Mixed Team Success In Lusk

At the Lusk 4 Mile Shane Spring was second man and Mick Clohisey third. With Lucy Barrett second female and Ailis Murtagh third gave the Raheny team the mixed team title. Cillian Kirwan Sets New Club 800m Indoor Record

Cillian Kirwan set a new club 800m indoor record at the NIA Live meet in Abbotstown last night. Kirwan posted 1:48.09 to win heat three by some five seconds from Annadale’s Brhane Gebrehrhan.
