Mark Smyth made an impressive European under 20 championship debut finishing fourth in heat one of the 200 metres and progressing to the semi-final automatically.
Smyth ran a strong opening 100 metres before trying slightly in the final 80 metres to finish fourth in 21.63 seconds and safely progress to the semi-final.
The race was won outright by Jona Efoloko in 21.26 seconds with Norwegian Matthias Hove second in 21.30 and Spain’s Manuel De Nicolas third in 21.59 seconds.

The senior Ireland international has been drawn in lane seven of semi-final two which is due to start at 3:16pm Irish time on Saturday.
The first two in each semi-final and the two fastest losers all progress to the final which takes place at 5.40pm on Saturday.
