On the day of Brian Corcoran’s funeral it is worth noting the successes and longevity of his coaching career.
From Ciarán McDunphy in 1984 to Cillian Kirwan in 2021 Brian coached athletes to national senior individual medals with a 37-year span from the first to the last medal and in five different decades (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s).
Brian coached national senior champions in three of those decades (80s, 90s and 10s) with nine titles won (Ciaran McDunphy – 5, myself – 3, Ciarán O’Cathain-1).
Disciplines ranged from hurdles, middle distance to 5k road. He served as national hurdles coach for a number of years and was coaching staff on many junior, U23s and school internationals.
Brian’s successes have also extended to international level with Orla Comerford winning two World-para Athletics European Championship medals and she’s a two time Paralympian.
Also an endless amount of national relay, intervarsity, U23 and underage medals won by athletes coached by Brian.
This was all as the man himself would humorously say after any achievement by one of his athletes “In spite of our best efforts”. Truly an exceptional coach.
