It was a strange day for the big contingent of Raheny athletes who took part in the Great Ireland Run this morning.
The Great Ireland Run includes the national 10km race championship, however it became quickly apparent that something wasn’t right and in fact an incorrect turn caused the race to measure 8.5km.
In that regard the national championship results are declared null and void. A statement issued by Athletics Ireland advised an update will be issued after consultation with the event organiser.
While not running as far as they planned to, there was some good performance in the Phoenix Park.
Dylan O’Brien was first home in 28:51 followed by Barry Meehan 29:18, Joe McCracken 29:45, Davey Duane 30:57, Mark Hogan 30:53, Oran Heron 31:18.
Aaron Tansey 31:29, Eoghan Wrafter 31:29, Zoe Quinn 31:40, Rory O’Sullivan 31:42, Annette Kealy 31:53 Michael Kehoe 33:46, Graham Ahearne 33:46, Tom Loftus 35:15.
Trish Fitzgerald 37:33, Robert Mangan 37:47, Sinead Currie 38:03, Fintan O’Hanlon 40:09, Sorcha Delargy 40:20, Richie Kenneally 41:48, Eadaoin Patton 45:43 and Michael McGrath 66:47.
Editor comment: I can only sympathise with our friends in Dublin City Harriers after the error in the Great Ireland Run. Unfortunately an error which was seen in the Great Ireland Run can happen extremely easily.
While I have no doubt that people from our club and others who ran this morning are unhappy over the events, I would ask them to allow DCH the organisers of the Great Ireland Run, some time to complete their investigation and find final position.
From speaking to the organisers of the race, over the last year, I know they were extremely committed to providing a high quality event, which they have been organising for some 20-years.
