Sophie Becker’s Ireland Take European Championship Silver

Sophie Becker helped Ireland wrap a silver lining around the European Championships as Ireland took 4x400m relay silver.

Becker led the Irish team out with a very strong opening leg as the team of Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy and Sharlene Mawdsley took silver in a dramatic race.

Becker produced a powerful opening leg, handing over to Adeleke in third place. Adeleke’s powerful running with Phil Healy just being pipped by an extremely strong Dutch team in the home straight.

Sharlene Mawdsley produced another brilliant race to steer Ireland home to silver medals fighting hard with World 400m record holder Femke Bol for the line.

A brilliant performance from the Irish team over a brilliant week for Irish athletics.

Sophie Becker becomes the first Raheny Shamrock athlete to medal at the European Championships.

Becker joins Dave Rooney as a European medallist. Rooney won European U23 cross country team gold in 2010.

Meanwhile, Brian Fay posted a very credible 28:40.53 for 20th place in the 10,000m final.
