Becker And Favors Take Olympic Paris 2024 Bow

Sophie Becker and Eric Favors both entered the 2024 Olympic Games but were left disappointed.

The Irish mixed 4x400m relay team failed to advance to the final at the Stade de France.

The quartet of Christopher O’Donnell, Sophie Becker, Thomas Barr and Sharlene Mawdsley fell just short of making tomorrow’s decider. The team finished fourth in semi-final two in 3:12.67.

Outside the automatic qualifying places and the fastest losers spots.

“It’s crazy to say we are a bit disappointed with that” said Sophie Becker. “But this team has been growing over the last three years, it has been harder to keep your place on the team. 400m running in Ireland is at a crazy level”.

Becker will return to the Stade de France for both the 400 metres and as part of the women’s 4x400m relay later in the week. Becker officially became the second Raheny Shamrock athlete to compete at multiple Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, there was also disappointment for Eric Favors in the Men’s Shot Put. The 27-year-old, competing at his first Games, threw a best of 19.02m to finish 27th overall. Unfortunately not enough to progress to the final.

“It was rough” admitted Favors. “I’ve been dealing with a couple of injuries, but I tried to put my best foot forward but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to qualify”.

“I’ve had a really weird year. I had this circled on my board, to become an Olympian and I achieved that.”
