Sophie Becker made her Olympic individual bow taking sixth place in her 400m heat in Paris this morning.
Becker clocked 51.87 seconds for sixth place in heat one. The race was won by Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain in 49.91 seconds.
“It’s disappointing. I was hoping for a good bit faster than that” explained Becker. “To make a semi, or run a PB, or both is obviously what I’d have liked to do”.
“I’m happy with my first 250m, I ran that really well, I put myself in the mix, It’s definitely a learning curve for tomorrow” added Becker.
Becker will return to action in the repechage tomorrow morning. There will be four repechage with only the winner in each, and the top two fastest of the next best advancing to the semi-finals.
Sophie Becker was “disappointed and a bit confused” after finishing sixth in her 400m heat but determined to reach the semi-final or run a personal best in tomorrow’s repechage

There was a small bit of history made by Sophie Becker this morning as she became the Raheny Shamrock athlete with the most Olympic event appearances.
This morning was Becker’s fourth Olympic appearance to go with Friday’s 4x400m mixed relay and two appearances in the 4x400m mixed relay in Tokyo 2020. Becker passes Dick Hooper who has three appearances at three different games.
