Men’s Team Take Indoor League Sixth Place

A young Raheny Shamrock men’s team took an encouraging sixth place at the national indoor T&F league final in Athlone.

Colm Bourke opened proceedings with a best jump of 13.77 to win the triple jump. This was a strong performance considering Colm competed in Loughborough, England, less than 24 hours before, jumping 7.02 in the long jump there.

Amazing commitment from a long time club stalwart.

Juan Ignacio was first up on the track in the men’s 800m. Juan’s first outing of the indoor season after a month long stint in Chile. From gun to tape Juan held the lead finishing in 1:53.83 this was the fastest time overall, securing maximum points for Raheny.

Back to the field and it was over to the versatile Dave Moore. Moore, finished 11th in the pole vault and later threw 4.02m in the weight for distance. A busy day for the master’s athlete.

To the sprints, it was 16-year-old Davyd Konovalov in the 200m. Konovalov finished second in his heat clocking a new personal best of 22.72 seconds. This placed Davyd fifth overall. An impressive performance from the young Ukrainian.

The international Raheny contingent was once again called upon when Juan Ignacio returned to dominate proceedings in the 3000m. A comfortable win for the Chilean in 8:32.67.

The final event of the day was the 4x400m relay. A young team consisting of Oisín McCorry, Erik Sammon, Jack Beary and Davyd Konovalov ran bravely to come third in their heat, with an overall placing of sixth.

With points from this round being combined with those from round one in Abbotstown, the men’s team finished sixth overall on 150 points, an agonising one point off the top five finish, which the team was targeting.

Well done to all those who togged out for the team. A return to the premier division of Irish Athletics is the goal for the men’s team in the coming outdoor season.
