Update from Raheny Shamrock Green Team

The Raheny Shamrock AC Green Team would like to share with you some of our recent highlights.

Engagement and clean up Bull Island with Dublin City Council

We had a clean-up of plastic on Bull Island last June and learned all about the ecology and nature habitat from the Park Ranger.

Gear Swap

We held a gear swap in the clubhouse in July with aim of the reuse of athletic gear.

Raheny Tidy Village Group

Members of the team have met the Raheny Tidy Village Group to identify potential collaborative events. We also attended the launch of their recent Biodiversity Action Plan. Events are being planned so watch this space, we’ll be looking for your support.

Raheny & Clontarf GAA

We have reviewed the GAA Green Clubs toolkit and engaged with local clubs around the valuable contributions they have been able to make, with a view to learning from our neighbours and future collaboration across a range of sustainable actions

Athletics Ireland

We have been in contact with Athletics Ireland Communications on sharing best practice for sustainable actions within athletics clubs and have registered our interest in their future Green clubs programme which is under development.

Continued waste separation support to post race events.

Waste segregation is ongoing in the club and we’re delighted to confirm a waste collection service is starting from end May with Panda. Thanks to Dave Hooper for organising. We appreciate all members ongoing support with segregating waste in the clubhouse and disposing of waste carefully when you are out training and racing.

With the Summer series starting on June 3rd, please bring your keep-cup or mug from home and join us at the clubhouse afterwards.

Big thank you to the Raheny 5 committee

The 2025 AXA Raheny 5 mile race continued to develop a Green approach to the goody bags before and after the race including the use of biodegradable plastic bags and responsible disposal of waste packaging. In addition information on travelling by public transport was promoted.

Please reach out to us on greenteam@rahenyshamrock.ie if you have any ideas for Green Initiatives or if you’d like to join the Green Team.

Thanks for your support, Sarah O’Neill (Green Officer), Jim Kelly, Ruth Colbert, Lorna Christie, Catherine Groves, Aileen Cooke
