Bannon’s Women Set The Tone

Aisling Drumgoole set the Shamrock’s women’s team off to an impressive start in this season National Track & Field League in Tallaght on Sunday.

Drumgoole won the 400 metres and finished second over 200 meters to give Kay Bannon’s team 16 points with Susie O’Flynn adding an 800 metres victory.

Lucy Barrett landed eight points in the 1500 meters with Orla Comerford doing likewise in the 100 metres as did Helen Buckley in the High Jump, Kim O’Hare in the triple jump and Mieke Kiernan in the hammer.

Kay Bannon’s side signed off on a score card of 99 points, which saw them finish behind Dundrum South Dublin (105 pts) and Kildare County (101 pts) in their pool.

The women’s team head to round two in fifth place, as Galway County lead the way with 124 points, followed by DSD and Kildare County with Wexford County fourth on 105 points.

The Shamrock’s and Bandon both have 99 points followed by Meath Athletics in seventh place on 96 points, Leevale (95), St.Abbans (91), Tipperary County (89), Finn Valley (74) and Clonliffe Harriers (74).

The top eight teams progress to the final.

Simon Devenney’s team find themselves with some work to do to make the final in Tullamore, having finished fourth in the Tallaght pool of round one.

There were some top performances with victories for Kieran Kelly in the 1500 metres, Freddy Sittuk taking the steeplechase, Eoin Strutt the 5,000 metres and Colm Bourke the long jump.

With the results from Athlone added up, the men’s team are in seventh position with a total of 97 points.

The men’s premier division leader board reads 1.Clonliffe Harriers (125 pts), 2.Tipperary (123 pts), 3.Menapians (123 pts), 4. Leevale (117), 5.Finn Valley (107).

6.DSD (103), 7.Raheny (97), 8.Galway City Harriers (95) followed by Donore Harriers (92), Crusaders (85), St. Abbans (81), Kildare County (76), Tullamore Harriers (72), Kilkenny City Harriers (42).

Round two is scheduled for July 30 with Mary Peters Track Belfast and Templemore as the venues.
