Eight Medals at Junior and Under 23 Nationals

Raheny Shamrock continued their dominance as Ireland’s leading athletics club taking home four gold medal, two silver and two bronze from the National Junior and Under 23 championships.

Brian Fay got preceding’s under way with junior steeplechase gold clocking nine minutes 46 point 11 seconds on his way to victory.

Next up was Eoin Strutt who took gold in the under 23 5,000 metres, clocking a winning time of 14 minutes 50 point 97 seconds.

Conor Bermingham continued his impressive season when he pole vaulted his way to gold with a best jump of 4.10 metres.

Gold was not the only colour on the table as Matthew Cotter took junior triple jump bronze with a best of 12.43 metres.

This was followed by Sean O’Driscoll under 23 100 metre silver medal clocking 11.05 seconds, having qualified from his heat in a new personal best of 10.83 seconds.

Niamh Corry grabbed silver in the junior 5,000 metres posting 18 minutes 20 point 25 seconds well clear of bronze medallist Avril Deegan from Laois.

There were plenty of strong performances abound as Susie O’Flynn placed sixth in the junior 800 metres clocking 2:32.39 followed by Aoibhinnn McGoldrick seventh in 2:21.07.

Matthew Cotter took fourth place in the junior long jump clocking 6.63 metres while Lucy Barrett finished sixth in the 1500 metres in 5.03.40.

Mark Smyth was just outside the medals in the100 metres, finishing fourth in 10.78 seconds, having qualified from his heat in 10.87 seconds.

Dylan Kirwan sixth place in the 400m Hurdles posting 60.11 seconds with Daniel Scully taking fifth place in the 1500 metres posting 4:15.55.

To wrap the day off in style the junior women’s 4×400 metre relay teams bagged gold and bronze.

The A team of Ailbhie Finnegan, Suzie O’Flynn, Lucy Barrett and Aoibhinnn McGoldrick stopped the clock at four minutes six point 94 seconds a full five seconds clear of Carlow outfit SLOT.

The B team of Triona Ni Domhnail, Kaylee Ni Bhrian, Keave Flynn and Keave Boylan took bronze in four minutes 17.40 seconds a full 25 seconds clear of Meath team Trim.
