Raheny Ready For Morton Games Invasion

International athletics comes to Dublin on Wednesday evening with the Morton Games taking place in Santry’s Morton Stadium.

A whole host of international athletes have arrived in Dublin to take part in the meet hosted by Clonliffe Harriers which is now part of the European Athletics Area series.

Kieran Kelly will attempt to become the first Raheny Shamrock athlete ever to break the magical four minute mile barrier.

The famous Morton Mile, the highlight of the Morton Games meet gets underway at 9pm sharp as the Blue Riband of Irish Mile running.

16 athlete’s will toe the line with some very fast times due on the track, American Pat Casey the fastest in the field having a personal best of 3:52.62.

It’s a credit to the race organisers that a waiting list of 24 athlete’s is in standing for entry to the Morton Mile.

The track programme begins at 6pm with the main international programme getting underway about one hour later.

Sean O’Driscoll will be on track around 6.26pm in the 100 metre heats, the 100 metre final taking place at 8:14pm.

Andrew Hyland and Brian Fay will both line out in the Junior Mile which begins at 6.20pm for what will be a certain fast four laps of the track.

A host of the club’s middle distance athlete’s will take part in a high quality 5,000 metres with the Raheny singlet worn by Kevin Dooney, Conor Dooney, Mick Clohisey and Daire Birmingham.

The 5,000 metres is due off at 7:54pm a nice pre cursor to the 100 metre final.

The organisers are also hoping to see Ciara Mageean become the first Irish woman to break two minutes for 800 metres.

It’s will be an excellent night in Morton Stadium, Santry, tickets available at Morton Stadium, €10 for adults with under 16’s admitted free.
