Mark Smyth wrote himself into the history books in Tullamore as he claimed the 100/200 metre double at the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools.
Smyth was slow out of the blocks in the 100 metres, though quickly clawed back the ground he lost on Presentation Athenry’s Cillin Greene.
The final 40 metres were all Smyth’s as he forced his way past Greene to win by a whisker with both athlete’s accredited with a time of 10.70 seconds.
Some 60 minutes later Smyth was at it again but this time showed his dominance over the 200 metres and powered clear to win out in 21.57 seconds with Greene again taking silver in 21.68 seconds.
The double for the St. Fintan’s High School Sutton man and equalling both the club’s senior 100 and 200 metre records, Smyth having set the 100 metre record last Saturday.
The 200 metres record is also held by Kieran Finn and was set in Dublin on July 23 1987.
Belvedere College’s Brian Fay was the first star of the day when he won the 2,000 metre steeplechase in a comfortable 6:07.65 well cleat of Eoghan Keaney in 6:26.87.
Sutton Park’s Kim O’Hare raised the bronze medal in the triple jump with a best of 10.92 metres, the gold was won by Grace Furlong of CBS New Ross in 11.41 metres.
Holy Faith Clontarf’s Suzie O’Flynn landed senior 800 metre bronze in 2:17.25, gold having been won by Rose Finnegan in 2:12.81.
Daniel Beveridge landed intermediate discus silver with a personal best of 49.67 metres. Hugh Flood finished fourth in the intermediate hammer with a personal best of 46.49 metres with Sean Maher sixth in 42.49 metres.
Matthew Cotter took fifth place in the men’s triple jump. Brian Fay took fifth place in the 1500 senior boy’s metre final.
