Future Is Bright As Young Raheny Dominate Club Championships

Mark Smyth may start looking over his shoulder. Raheny’s fastest man is a marked man.

If yesterday’s club track & field championships are anything go by; a huge body of the club’s younger members are out to emulate him

No less than 45 Athletes took part in the 200m, resulting in eight very entertaining and competitive races, setting the tone to a wonderful club day at the iconic and historic venue that is Morton stadium, Santry.

Ultimately Ethan Banks and Hannah Byrne would prove the fastest male and female respectively on the day. Ethan completed the double when again proving swiftest over the rarely raced 110 metres distance.

Isabel Twomey showed great speed when claiming the female equivalent.

At 800m Dylan Kirwan controlled the race from the front with a strong run and Siomha Magee showed huge potential when recording a time of 2.30 and winning comfortably.

There were gun to tape victories over 3,000m for Chris Hamill and Anne Marie Woods.

Race of the day had to be the mile where Tom Monaghan and Finn Renehan fought out a thriller. Monaghan had led for 3 laps but Renehan was always within striking distance. Having eventually caught Monaghan with 250m to go and set sail for home there then ensued a memorable home straight struggle that resulted in Monaghan prevailing by the narrowest of margins.

Siomha Magee added the women’s Mile title to complete a wonderful Afternoon’s work.

The Four Field Events were also very well supported with many trying their hand for the first time, event promoters Louise Keogh, Kay Bannon and Anne Buckley generously availed of the opportunity to also provide coaching nuggets of advice and wisdom.

After the very enjoyable mixed relay events brought the meet to conclusion, many of the protagonists, their supporters and the Officials adjourned to the Clonliffe Clubhouse to celebrate the day.

These are special days that emphasise more than any that Club is Family and that everyone belongs.

It was a theme emphasised by club chairperson Mick Martin and President Paddy Noonan in their inspirational speeches of encouragement aimed at the young audience. Our Club is in good hands.
