Eric Favors First Into Rome Cauldron

The 2024 European Championship begin on Friday in Rome with four Raheny Shamrock athletes representing Ireland.

Eric Favors is the first Raheny Shamrock athlete into action at the 2024 European Championship on Friday evening.

Favors gets his competition underway from 6:55pm in the shot put. Favors has done well to recover from injury and compete in his second European championships.

Brian Fay

Brian Fay takes part in the 5,000 metres on Saturday night in Rome. The 5,000m final is scheduled for 9:28pm on Saturday evening.

Brian will compete in the 10,000m final on Wednesday evening. Fay has had a brilliant season, breaking the Irish 5,000m record earlier this year.

Sophie Becker

Olympian Sophie Becker competes in her second European athletics championship and is entered in three events.

Becker is part of the panel for the mixed 4x400m relay team which is in action on Friday night.

While Becker enters the Rome Olympic stadium cauldron on Sunday nigtht in the 400 metre semi-final. The semi-finals get underway at 7:10pm this evening.

Becker is also part of the women’s 4x400m relay team which begins their campaign on Tuesday morning at 10:15am on Tuesday.

Mark Smyth

Mark Smyth takes part in his second European championship, following on from Munich two years ago. Smyth takes part in two events starting with the 200 metres on Sunday morning. The 200 metres gets underway at 10:50am

Smyth is part of the 4x100m relay team who get their campaign underway at 11am on Tuesday.

It is an amazing achievement that four Raheny Shamrock athlete’s will compete for Ireland at the European championships. All four will be making their second appearance at this competition, having competed at Munich 2022.

Pat Hooper (Prague 1978), Dick Hooper (Prague 1978, Athens 82, Stuttgart 86, Split 90), Paddy McGrath (Budapest 1998), David Rooney (Helsinki 2012), Mick Clohisey (Amsterdam 2016, Berlin 18) and Brandon Arrey (Berlin 2018) have all competed in these championships for Ireland.
