The World Athletics championships get underway in Tokyo tonight.
It is another special championships for Raheny Shamrock athletic club as Eric Favors, Sophie Becker and Brian Fay will all represent Ireland.
The trio will repeat their appearances at a World Championship as they did in Budapest 2023.
Eric Favors will be the second Irish athlete into battle in the championships taking part in the men´s shot put qualification on Saturday morning.
Sophie Becker is part of the Irish panel in the 4×400 mixed relay which also got their championships underway in the opening session.
Becker is due back in competition this morning in the women´s 400 meters heats. That competition gets under way from 11.25. Becker is also part of the women´s 4x400m relay team which gets their campaign underway on Saturday September 20.
Brian Fay´s competition begins on Friday September 19th in the men´s 5,000 meters.
This will be Eric Favors and Sophie Becker´s third World Championship appearance, making it three in a row, having competed in Oregon 2022 and Budapest 2023. Brian Fay makes his second appearance in these championships having competed in Budapest two years ago.
Becker, Favors and Fay are the club´s fourth, fifth and sixth athlete´s to compete in the World Championships. The first three were, Kieran Finn, Rome 1987 (4x400m Men’s Relay), Paddy McGrath, Seville 1999 (Hammer) and Mick Clohisey London 2017 (Marathon).
