Christmas Morning Revisited

After the storm abated, the winds calmed and the rain chose to go away it was time for the scrutineers to listen to hard luck stories, seek clarifications, study the evidence and then do what judges are charged with doing. Making hard decisions.

The finality of the Finish Line had decided most of the winners. Kieran Kelly, for the 5th time in his career was overall winner. Lucy Barrett in a desperate lunge for the tape out-leaned Susie O’Flynn to take the women’s title for the second time.

Adam Condon in second place overall won Junior Honours and Elena Forkan was the first Junior Lady. The first juvenile across the line was George Sevastopulo.

And so to the competition that evokes so many emotions among club members who rise to the challenge.

The Brian McLaughlin Cup is awarded to the athlete who having forecast beforehand what time they will finish in, runs closest to their prediction.

The Freddy Fox Cup goes to the family team (parent and child) who run closest to their combined predicted times.

So to the winners. Eimear O’Keeffe had declared a time of 5:40 prior to the race. Her actual time of 5:41, where she possibly could have squandered that second only she can account for, was good enough to hold off all challengers.

Then when it comes to the Freddy Fox family challenge nobody does it better than the Mighty Manleys. Once again the shrewd planning and sheer cuteness of captain Orla and mother Bernie handled the conditions and opposition with typical aplomb to bring home their umpteenth title.
