Becker’s Ireland Make European Final

Sophie Becker helped the Irish women’s 4×400 metre relay team in the European Championship final in Munich.

Becker ran the opening leg as the Irish team finished second in their semi-final and advanced to the final as automatic qualifiers.

The team of Becker, Phil Healy (Bandon), Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght) and Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport) posted an Irish record of 3:26.06.

The Irish team made much of the running before finishing behind the Netherlands in 3:25.84. The final takes place at 8.45pm tomorrow Irish time.

There was disappointment for the Mark Smyth and the men’s 4x100m relay team. Smyth and his team have huge efforts throughout 2022 to make the European championship.

Israel Olatunde made a very fast start handing over to Smyth with a very clean run. However the handover to Colin Doyle failed.

The dropped baton saw Ireland out of the race.

The effort made by the Irish team to qualify for the European championships should be marked highly and no doubt this is just the start for this very talented sprint team.
