The Annual Joe Noonan Cup race takes place on Sunday December 18th, continuing it’s 44 years tradition on the last Sunday before Christmas.
Over the last 10 years this event has been poorly supported but last year we managed to attract a field of over 50 members with a revamped course and reduced distance (5 miles over a two lap course).
Due to covid restrictions, we had an outdoor event beside the Cara Hall where amongst other things we presented the Athlete of the Year awards. This was very well attended and proved quite successful, where people brought their own coffee and lingered.
This year with the availability of the Old Church Clubhouse we have scope to further grow the event. The Joe Noonan Race actually finishes at The Taxi Rank, beside the Old Church.
As attempt to grow the participation side of the race (confined to club members) and feel this can be done if a festive vibe is introduced.
In doing so we propose to promote a team race and incorporate this into the race as follows.
Entry fee of €5 will be 100% donated to GOAL. Entrants will lodge €5 to the Club Account online and then text confirmation. The Idea of a fee is to get firm commitment.
– From the entries, teams of four will be drawn as follows
Senior 19 -39
Young Master 40- 55
Senior Master 56 – 65
Mixer 16-18 and 66+.
One athlete from each bowl with further proviso that teams comprise two males and two females.
– The Draw for teams to be made from declared entries at 3pm on Saturday December 17th.
– Teams to be named with festive feel such as Team Rudolph, Team Scrooge, Selection Box Harriers, etc
– Prizes to consist of Christmas Fare
Post race adjourn to the Clubhouse for a reception with a Christmas Feel, Sausage rolls, Mince Pies, Teas and Coffees, etc. At this reception Athletes of Year Awards presented.
- Open invitation to all Club Members who wish to attend if interested.
